A Big Sigh of Relief for LAONA Members!
It is about a month now since the Lango Association was named in an article in the Monitor as one of the Ugandan communities in North America who get money from UNAA. After weeks of pleading and begging both UNAA and the Monitor to correct that information and being totally ignored by UNAA, it finally come to a head today and the UNAA Executives cleared the air. “The Lango Association of North America did not apply for the Community Development Fund and therefore it did not receive any funds from UNAA.” read the email! That was what our members and supporters were hoping to hear.
It took the intervention of our Immediate Past and Founding Chair, Prof. Omara-Alwala to get this simple yet very significant sentence out of the UNAA President. It is ironic that they were worried about our accusations damaging their reputation! isn’t that the very same reason why we were asking them to clear the air in the first place because the information that was published was damaging to our Association’s reputation?
Attached is the UNAA President’s email. Included is Prof. Omara-Alwala’s email to UNAA as well for full context. To all our members and supporters who needed reassurance, there you have it. Email link is below:
THE 2017 LANGO ASSOCIATION OF NORTH AMERICA’S ANNUAL CONVENTION
MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
The 2017 Lango Association of North America’s convention will take place June 23-25 in Newark, New Jersey. This convention will be a celebration of LAONA’s resilience against all odds. We will welcome all of our friends from near and far, who have supported us over the years and would like to join us in the celebrations. The Convention will also provide us with yet another opportunity to meet together with our fellow members and reaffirm or revise our short and long-term priorities of the Association.
THE 2018 DIVERSITY IMMIGRANT VISA PROGRAM
Every year, the United States’ Department of State gives people from all over the world the opportunity to migrate to the United States through a lottery program. Below are instructions on the Lottery program for 2018. Although it is a lottery, it does not hurt to give it a shot. You just never know! BUT as instructed, please do not apply unless you meet the requirements. Full instructions attached below in PDF:
THE LANGO CONSTITUTION
The Lango Constitution is currently being reviewed/drafted. While we do not yet know which body within the Lango Cultural Foundation is responsible for the review, we have seen draft copies being shared for comments/feedback. I would strongly encourage anyone who receives this draft to take some time and review it and provide feedback. It is a document that will impact all of us, our children, and grandchildren. Have your say!
